Hungary punches above her weight

What is the significance of the Hungarian election for the world?

Five years ago, well before the so-called “refugee crisis” of 2015, I posted about the Orbanization of Europe and the “Hungarian disease”. That was  when it became obvious that the “Politically Correct liberal” status quo in the world is being threatened and  Hungary could be in the very epicentre of the global change which could destroy PC-liberalism.

Then came 2015 when, using the words of the left-liberal political site Politico,  which named PM Orban as Number One among those “who are shaping, shaking and stirring Europe”,  and Hungary really started “punching above her weight”, using their words again.

Foreign Policy, an influential American  neolib/con journal wrote this in 2016:

Orban’s populist intuition has enabled him to set the political agenda far beyond Hungary. Despite being one of the EU’s newer and poorer members, his country has punched above its weight.

Then this global political change reached the USA and President Trump was elected last year.  Viktor Orbán was the only Western leader who endorsed Donald Trump instead of Hillary Clinton.  If you look at the comment sections of  neolib-neocon media like The Financial Times, Bloomberg, Yahoo, The Economist, The Guardian, The New York Times, The Washington Post, etc. then you will see that a very significant number of their readers sharply reject the false picture their articles draw about Hungary and PM Orbán.  I would risk to say even that PM Orbán has reached a kind of political stardom in the West.

Look East“, suggested a leading French journalist and political thinker in the influential French newspaper Le Figaro a few days ago.

Orbán has invented the theory of illiberalism which he contrasted with liberalism but not with market economy. … This confrontation between liberalism and illiberalism, between ‘the rule of law’ and democracy, will be the main controversy in Europe. … The theory of illiberalism, which was born in Hungary, has spread all over Central Europe…  and this Hungarian theory may be the big chance for the French Right as well.

A popular British newspaper wrote that  “Hungary is a bigger threat to EU than Brexit. How Orbán’s victory could topple Brussels“.  Though I consider this more like a click-bait, I still think there’s a grain of truth in it.  The truth is that Orbán doesn’t want to dismantle the EU.  He wants to change Europe, and the European Union, for the better. He wants to destroy PC-liberalism which, as he said,  is suicide for the West.

As far as Hungarian domestic politics is concerned, with his third landslide election victory, Orbán has become the most successful Hungarian politician of all times. Only the political record of PM István Tisza from the early 20th century comes close  but  Tisza certainly didn’t make an impact in international politics.

One could definitely conclude almost five years after that blog post that  Europe is being “Orbanized” undoubtedly and the “Hungarian disease” is spreading indeed.  Actually it’s spreading even outside Europe. 🙂

What is even more encouraging is that the Orbán’s reply to his spectacular political success was  Soli Deo gloria.

Orbán’s victory speech and first interview

I never thought this would be possible but it seems PM Orban’s Fidesz-KDNP has won the third supermajority (two thirds of the seats)!  It’s a huge victory indeed.

Orbán’s victory speech was succinct. He simply thanked the Hungarian voters for the very high turnout, he thanked his supporters, the party activists’ work and his wife personally. Then he said “Soli Deo gloria” (“Glory to God alone” in Latin).   (Yes, he is Protestant).

He gave an interview to Echo TV shortly after the speech:

We’re not against Europe and the European Union. We do want Europe and we do want the European Union. We want a successful and strong European Union.  To this end, we must speak up first and we must tell everything frankly what we don’t like.. …

Hungary doesn’t want to commit those mistakes which other countries, richer and more powerful than us, have committed.  We don’t want Europe to be ruined because of these mistakes. We want to rectify these mistakes.  Hungary, with her full weight, is ready to take part in this common European work.”

Let’s save in Europe what can be still saved! Part I.

This blog post is a translation of an interview by famous French writer philosopher and political thinker Renaud Camus,  made  by  the Hungarian conservative  portal Mandiner. Mr. Camus has also posted the interview on his Facebook page in French.

It’s long but it’s well worth reading. I’m going to publish it in several parts.  I’ve run the human translated Hungarian and the original French texts though Google Translate and this is an edited version, making use of my limited French reading skills and my native Hungarian.

You have invented the notion for “the Great Replacement”.  You insist that this is not a theory but it’s today’s most striking  actuality. How will you explain this phenomenon to our Hungarian readers?

The Hungarian readers don’t even know how lucky they are that they need an explanation for this! They should avoid it like the plague! This is horror! For the French, the English, the Swedes, even for the Italians now, the Great Replacement is a daily experience, it’s the bare reality: mass immigration, demographic decline, a change of people and civilization, an ethnic change, Islamization, Africanization, a genocide by replacement. There have lived people in a particular territory for centuries and, all of a sudden, there are others there in one or two generations.  This time indigenous people are not being eliminated, even though they are suffering from a lot of attacks and from crime,  but they are gradually submerged. They are being drowned, they are being erased from photos, they are being replaced.

You emphasize that the Great Replacement is not a conspiracy theory.  You said that “I’m usually blamed that I don’t clarify the the causes of the Great Replacement.  In fact I’m cautious about this indeed because I want to unite people, not to divide them”. However you also spoke of  “a cohesive beam of certain interests and taboos.” What are these interests and taboos?

This is what I call global replacementism (replacement ideology), or as “davocracy” more recently, or even “direct davocracy”: the management of the human park by Davos.  You know that little Swiss town where the world’s financial elite hold their annual Nuremberg Congress.

The Karl Marx for global replacementism is called  Frederick Winslow Taylor and  his major work, his “The Capital”,  is titled “The Principles of Scientific Management”. The interests are the same in economic terms as the two meanings of that word: in a purely economic sense, that is to say, in a financial world view, there is economics, the minimal cost, the drive to save up, having no-frills through equalization and standardization.  Cinematographically speaking, we could say  that global replacementism is “Modern times” plus “Metropolis” plus “Soylent Green”.  The hyper-rich, the financial elite disconnected from the world, want to impose a general proletarianization [on the world] through forced mixing of peoples, the grinding of human matter into an undifferentiated industrial pulp.

You often compare the Holocaust with replacementism. What do you think  the common features of these two phenomena are?

– First of all, it is industrialization, that is treating humans as matter. I don’t conflate the two things at all. The specific features of the Holocaust show up distinctly to me. However I do believe we can always compare everything to everything else, even if only to  distinguish things better. We always view the Holocaust as a crime against the Jews and of course we are right about that. But this was also a crime against man, against the humanity of man. I have had a great debate  about this topic with my friend Alain Finkielkraut who considers the Holocaust as a unique, an unparalleled horror story which nothing should be compared with.  I think on the contrary, in darker colours, that it was the epicentre of Evil, the very heart of darkness, the most appalling chapter of  history which began well before. It started probably with the Industrial Revolution and it’s not over.  Far from it! It’s about the dehumanization of man, it’s about reducing man to matter, to ashes, to lamp shades, to pasta. It’s about humans’ dwelling boxes in Asia’s megacities and elsewhere where workers pay real fortunes for rooms where they can’t even stand up only so they could be be close to their jobs where they earn barely enough to pay for their rent.  These are the successors to the barracks in Auschwitz.  They belong to the same story. We must never forget that the Ford factories in Germany were closely related to the death camps and they worked in close symbiosis with them. Hitler was a great admirer of Henry Ford, an ardent anti-Semite, whose photograph he had on his desk at the Chancery. Ford  was the man who  put Taylor’s tenets into practice in the best way. He had the brilliant idea of selling his cars to the workers who had made them in order to make the manufacturer a consumer. Today’s global replacementism goes even further: It makes the consumer the product: see how the Gafa (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon)  works.

“Hungary and the other Visegrád countries are the citadel of our hopes” – you wrote in your response to my interview request. Do you think Central Europe is the last bastion in the fight against replacementism?

–  I think you mean anti-racism, don’t you? The resistance to replacement? Yes, I think that the countries of Central and Eastern Europe have been vaccinated by the horrors of the Communist occupation, of this totalitarianism, against this other totalitarianism, this coming totalitarianism which is already prevalent in Western Europe,  replacementism. To paraphrase Marx, we may say that a specter haunts Europe, it’s the specter of  replacementism. It’s  Western Europe and Brussels where its grip is the strongest. These countries, which used to be the free world, a deafening repression comes down on the opponents to global replacementism, on those who, like me, are driven from everywhere and they become undead. Freedom has turned in her bed. She has changed sides and blocks. If the Iron Curtain reinstall, God forbid,  then Western Europe’s dissidents will risk their lives to “go to the East”. I have more and more friends who  keep telling me that they are looking for an apartment in Budapest. And I recommend only half-jokingly that France should apply for a membership in the Visegrád alliance.

Too many white people, too many crosses for EU

The city of Székesfehérvár was a  Hungarian royal residence and it played an important role in Hungary’s history:  our first kings were crowned and buried here.  Székesfehérvár  has recently applied to become “The European Capital of Culture” for 2023.

The city council had this promotional film made for the jury:

The application has been rejected.  As mayor  Dr. András Cser-Palkovics recalled on a press conference after the hearing that the jury objected on the grounds that “there were too many happy white people and crosses and not enough migrants” (in the film featuring Székesfehérvár) . Here is a link to the Hungarian language web page of Székesfehérvár and here is an English language summary from elsewhere.

So this is where we stand in 2018. The European Union has let the cat out of the bag. Their favoured cat is anything but white.

Europe’s future

… well,  Western and Northern Europe’s future.

Watch what Paul Weston, a British politician who was arrested in the UK for reading out quotes from a book by Winston Churchill about Islam, has to say about the coming conflict in Europe:

Of Jobbik, the illegal migrants and refugees

These days we may witness quite peculiar developments in Hungarian domestic politics… which do have international relevance.  One may definitely spot a universal pattern for the left-liberal attitude in general and their so-called “values” in the following story!

As some of my readers may know, Jobbik is a (former?) far-right party which surfaced out of nowhere in Hungary in about 2008. They appeared on the political scene by their winning three European parliamentary seats in 2009 and then they made it into the Hungarian Parliament in 2010 as a rather significant opposition force. Their main political agenda appeared to be creating and riding anti-Gypsy and anti-Jewish sentiments arising from Hungary’s de-facto economic bankruptcy  in 2008.   The international mainstream media were very keen indeed to illustrate all their reports from Hungary with such pictures of “Nazi Jobbik rallies”:

jobbik

A 2014 picture of Jobbik supporters from an MSM article (Reuters)

The so-called “progressive forces”, that is the remnants of the PC-liberal regime which ran amok in Hungary between 2002 and 2010, never failed to accuse Fidesz and PM Orbán of collusion with “Nazi Jobbik” either in those times.

As in 2010, PM Orbán’s Fidesz-KDNP  had a landslide victory again in 2014.   The climax of the  illegal migration crisis , which put Hungary in international limelight, occurred in the autumn of 2015.  This was the time when Orbán’s government eventually built a border fence in order to protect Hungary, and Europe, from the so-called “refugees”, that is hordes of Middle Eastern and African illegal migrants whose influx was actively supported by the “NGOs” of George Soros, by Angela Merkel’s Germany and by the EU itself, stormed Hungary.   Then Jobbik demanded “tougher measures” against them and the “progressive ones”, that is the postcommunists and PC-liberals, were blowing the Refugees Welcome Because Illegal Migration is a Basic Human Right trumpets.  You may know this as the deeply hypocritical and false  “Willkommenskultur” phenomenon.

Then only about a year later,   Jobbik and those progressive ones,  the very same people who used to drool about “Orbán’s collusion with the neo-Nazi Jobbik”,  started to befriend each other spectacularly. This rapid process was called “Jobbik’s people’s party turn”.   Soon PC-liberal “celebrities”, such as Marxist philosopher Ágnes Heller, started advocating “a technical coalition with Jobbik in order to remove Orbán from power”. The international mainstream media quickly followed suit and they took a liking to Jobbik very soon, too.

So ex-“Nazi” Jobbik campaigned against a referendum which the Orbán-government initiated so that Hungary’s Constitution could be changed in order to block the EU’s mandatory migrant quotas. (The ruling parties lost their supermajority in a by-election in 2015 which they won on the 2014 elections as they did in 2010.   A supermajority, that is two thirds of the seats in the Hungarian Parliament, is needed to change the Hungarian Constitution.).  Jobbik didn’t vote for the proposed constitution amendment  and they also tried to blackmail the government parties.  Soon Jobbik even stood up for the so-called “civil organizations”,  Soros-financed  NGO’s supporting and organizing illegal migration into Europe, and his privileged Central European University which is a training facility for PC-liberal Social Justice Warriors!

Vona, leader of the radical Jobbik party attends an interview with Reuters in Budapest

A 2017 picture about Jobbik chairman Gábor Vona in an MSM article (Reuters)

And now comes the punchline of the story.  It made news a few weeks ago that Hungary provided temporary protection to about 1300 people in 2017 who submitted their asylum application at the border fence.  PM Orbán said in a  radio interview last Friday:

That is about people who are in need of protection, who are in need of protection under international law: people who differ from migrants in the sense that, first of all, they knocked on our door. The migrants, you see, left a trail of destruction on our country’s border and they entered the territory of Hungary illegally; and not only did they fail to obey Hungary’s laws, but they declared that they would not obey our laws. The people we are talking about now – these 1,300 people – politely waited at the border, they knocked on our door, they went to the official border crossing-points, and they told us that they needed protection. Most of them, by the way, are women and unaccompanied minors. The Hungarian authorities said that they would examine their applications; and incidentally the legal basis for this is formed by the international asylum conventions, which the Hungarian parliament earlier incorporated into our legal system. We have never accepted EU regulations on migrant quotas, and we shall never adopt them. So here in Hungary nobody can claim any rights based on those regulations. So we’ve assessed these people, we’ve seen that they truly are in need of protection, and we’ve granted them this on a temporary basis. This is an important point, because from the moment that they no longer need protection they must immediately return to where they came from.

So they won’t become Hungarian citizens?

They never will be. In Brussels we are condemned, and organisations operating in Hungary which support immigration condemn us, because we only grant protection which is temporary, and we don’t offer the opportunity of permanent residence. Incidentally the figures on exactly how many such people are present in Hungary are regularly released by the Immigration Office.

Now the left-liberal “progressive ones” in Hungary, in unison  with their newly found ally Jobbik, are talking of  “Orbán backing migration, conspiracy to settle migrants in Hungary”!  Hungarian speakers may want to watch  this  recent  video as a “Hungarian Cathy Newman” was serving as a microphone stand for a Jobbik party spokesman for this very purpose.  You just couldn’t make this up.

We must defend Christian culture

orban_writes

An excerpt from Prime Minister Orbán’s 2017 Christmas greeting:

When we draw the boundaries of our identity, we mark out Christian culture as the source of our pride and sustaining strength. Christianity is a culture and a civilisation. It is within this that we live. The essence is not how many people go to church, or how many pray with true devotion. Culture is the reality of everyday life: how we speak and behave towards one another; the distance we keep from one another and how we approach one another; how we enter this world, and how we leave it. For European people, Christian culture determines the morals of our daily lives. In borderline situations, this gives us a benchmark and a compass. Amidst the contradictions of life, Christian culture shows us the way. It determines our understanding of justice and injustice, the relationship between men and women, family, success, work and honour.

The fundamental elements of European life are now under attack. There is now a threat to the self-evident nature of European life: those things one should not need to think deeply about, but on which one only has to act. The essence of culture is that if it is not self-evident, we the people will lose our reference points: one will have no footholds, and one will have nothing against which to check one’s clock or one’s compass. Regardless of whether or not we attend church – or if so, which one we attend – we do not want to be forced to celebrate Christmas behind drawn curtains in order to avoid hurting the feelings of others.

We do not want our Christmas markets to be re-branded and we definitely do not want to have to retreat behind concrete barriers. We do not want our children to be deprived of the joys of Saint Nicholas, Santa Claus and the Christmas angels. We do not want to be robbed of the Feast of the Resurrection. We do not want our religious festivals and ceremonies to be haunted by anxiety and fear. We do not want our women and daughters to be molested in crowds of New Year’s Eve revellers.

We, Europeans are Christians. All this is ours, and this is how we live…

The World Congress of Families in Budapest

This morning Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has opened the Budapest Demographic Forum/Budapest Family Summit which is now being held under the auspices of the global World Congress of Families.  WCF  is an annual congress which is dedicated to families (as meant by normal, decent people or as it is defined in Hungary’s Constitution:  a life union of exactly one man and exactly one woman and their children!) and it’s an important forum for conservatives throughout the world.

ovcsaladnab2576x356

Incidentally, on this occasion, George Soros’ CEU university, which (unfortunately) the last couple of posts of mine were about, didn’t miss either to promote their sick left-liberal views:

The Central Eastern European region is quickly becoming a key player in the support of regional anti-gender movements and global right-wing politics. For example, the World Congress of Families and the International Organization for the Family, a large coalition of conservative organizations from around the globe, will host their annual conference in Budapest in late May under the theme “Building Family-Friendly Nations: Making Families Great Again.” Such developments require serious academic engagement and persistent multidisciplinary discussion.

With our invited guests we will review the gendered and hetero-normative aspects of right-wing discourses on the family, the root causes of such discourses and policies, and their consequences for LGBTQ rights and reproductive justice. The panel will provide an overview of the geopolitical stakes in focusing on particular formations of the family, as well as on the support for LGBTQ equality and reproductive justice in the post-Cold War world order. We will take a closer look at the Hungarian context and the role of discourses on the family in local and regional politics. This discussion between scholars and activists offers an intersectional perspective on gendered discourses and politics in light of the globalized right-wing movements.

Anyway, here are the major points PM Orbán made in his opening speech:

  • Europe is losing big time concerning the reproduction of her population. There are two approaches to solve this existential crisis: immigration and  supporting families … which is the Central European way.
  • Orbán said that his government is strongly committed to solving  Hungary’s demographic crisis by supporting Hungarian families instead of supporting mass immigration from the Middle East and Africa, which is still the preferred “solution” in Western and Northern Europe.
  • Hungary has succeeded in stopping the illegal mass immigration at her Southern borders.  “If that’s possible at all, Hungary will more even more resolute to defend her borders, regardless of any EU disapproval”, said Orbán.
  • Hungary lost about a million people in the last few decades and that’s more than our loss in WWII.  There were 10,8 million people living in Hungary in 1980 and now there are only 9.8 million.
  • Hungary’s fertility rate (the average number of children per woman) now stands at 1.5.  Orbán pledged that his government will increase the fertility rate to the level which is necessary to replenish the population, that is to 2.1, by 2030.
  • He announced a number of pro-family measures for 2018.  He also emphasized that Hungary’s subsequent governments must also exhibit this kind of supportive attitude for families.

The announced measures are the following:

  1. More family tax breaks, focussed on two-child families.
  2. 50% of the student loan will be paid by the government for those women who have student loans.  The student loan will be paid off entirely by the government for those women who have three or more children!
  3. Child care support will be provided for an additional year for women with degrees in higher education. Student mothers will be provided with this benefit until their child is two year old.
  4.  The Hungarian families with mortgages will be paid one million Forints (3250 EUR/2820 GBP/3660 USD) for their third child and one million Forints for each one after.
  5. The government initiates a “huge programme” to build, or to renovate, crèches (day care centres)
  6. Soon the Hungarian families living abroad may also have access to Hungary’s “baby bonds”. (This is a type of treasury bond with the objective of stimulating savings for children by their parents. Parents must make small monthly contributions and, in return, the child receives a guaranteed minimum amount tax-free upon turning 18.)
  7.   The government establishes a “family studies” think-tank which PM Orbán expects to become of international fame.

Please raze Soros’ university to the ground and salt its earth

The uncanny howling about Soros’ CEU university hasn’t subsided since last Wednesday.  The “whole world” protests against “Orbán’s grave attack against Hungary’s most prominent university”. Open letters, interviews, newspaper articles, a copious amount of media reports on a few thousand strong demonstration in Budapest, a long (and growing) queue of politicians, including Christian Democrat ones!, condemn Hungary because of the attack on… whatever. You know the drill.

According to this German article, “Hungary says no to science”.   Now let’s have a quick look at that what we should actually say “no” to.  I found a list of some theses which were submitted (and accepted!) at CEU last year.  All of them are written in English and they can be read in full at the provided links.  Please decide for yourself if they are scientific works or if you agree with me that they are left-liberal political pamphlets.

1. Dispossession and futurelessness : at the confluence of marxism and queer theory

The thesis compares the work of  Lee Edelman, the eminent figure of queer theory with the work of Hungarian Communist philosopher György Lukács.

2. Playing with identity : a study on the Budapest BDSM community

The thesis analyses the narratives of Sado-Masochists, with special regard to the role of games.

3. Blasphemy as tool for institutional critique

Through a number of cases, the thesis presents how blasphemy plays a role in post-Soviet art.

4. In the name of the mother : media discourse, nationalist ideology and the politics of reproduction in post-socialist Macedonia

This thesis reveals how media spreads nationalist ideology in Macedonia with the help of traditional sex roles and “the typification of the female body”.

5. Polish exceptionalism : hate speech laws between supra-national standards and national politics

This thesis examines why Polish  hate speech laws are substandard to international ones and why Polish criminal law does not provide protection for victims of hate speech motivated by bias on grounds of gender identity and sexual orientation.

6. Becoming and being : the experiences of young feminist men in Iceland

This thesis reviews life experiences of young Icelandic feminist males.

7. Qu(e)’erying the Qur’an : how non-heterosexual Muslims in London articulate sexual citizenship narratives

“This thesis aims to situate the phenomenon of “homonationalism” into lived experience in order to lay bare the contextual specificities of queer Muslim subjectivites in London, UK and to examine the local refigurations of power that informants enact therein. Through fieldwork at an inclusive Mosque in London, and interviews with queeridentifying Muslims, this ethnographic approach is dedicated to analyzing how those considered inauthentic in homonationalist imaginaries, and who are often elided in critical discourses of homonationalism itself, articulate narratives of sexual citizenship that challenge the regulatory codes of a universalizing script of homonormative sexuality, and how they make these pleas for belonging through a parallel reconstitution of Muslim normativities. ”

8. Migration in the Mediterranean : the smuggler as scapegoat

According to the thesis, even though illegal migration has been going on for decades,  human traffickers have been made scapegoats recently.

9. Constructing identity through the Hungarian “migration” discourse

The abstract is  gibberish  like “On the other hand, the feeling of instability aided the ontological insecuritization process, which was utilized to establish a situation where everyday routines were not working and the ontological insecuritization became possible”, but I guess the thesis argues that Orbán’s government uses the threat of the illegal migrants to Hungary to strengthen racism and xenophobia among Hungarians.

10. Anti-liberalism and antisemitism in dualist Hungary

The thesis presents anti-liberalism and anti-Semitism through the case of Kárpátalja (Transcarpathia) .

11. Hope of failure : subverting disgust, shame and the abject in feminist performances with menstrual blood

Er… check out the link if you really do want to know more details about this particular piece of progressive train of thought.

Darth Soros

I think the list speaks volumes indeed. Metaphorically speaking, Soros’ university in Budapest should be razed to the ground and sowed with salt.  Mr. Orbán, please do so!
